Oriental warfare was quite different from that of western nations, and setting appointments for battle was common at least down to the time of Marco Polo, who mentions it in descriptions of warfare. See especially the last battles he describes, involving people of "the Levant" (Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine). See also Hugh Nibley's discussion in his World of the Jaredites.

Thanks for this post. I just read in Mormon 3:4 and was asking myself why the king would give Mormon a head's up.

I'm comfortable with the fact that he did. What I'm trying to figure out is why? Genteel courtesy among the Lamanites? Having the pride and satisfaction of knowing that I conquered my enemy when he was ready, rather than in a surprise attack?

I'd love to get your take, John. I'd also like to know what the custom was in Joseph Smith's time (seems like I remember the American revolution involving a lot of surprise attacks, e.g., George Washington on Christmas, I believe). If this epistle would have been atypical in Joseph's time, I see it as another circumstantial evidence that someone else wrote the record, and he translated it.

I discuss this concept on my blog. Although I studied a different battle (The Amlicite Conflict in Alma 2) and came to a different conclusion. If you care to read and comment on it you can find it here http://mormonwar.blogspot.com/2009/02/prearranged-battle-in-book-of-mormon.html

Thanks for your time, and thanks for posting all of these great articles on your website.
